Muffin plates

Six small plates of muffins were handed off to a few friends today.

The fun part is just being able to slip in, drop off the muffins, and exit.  This was not for any reason other than an opportunity to say we appreciate these people.  We’ll get back to visit with them more at a later point.  But for right now, it’s good to have them as friends!

We’re planning to hand out more next week.  And, if we have the opportunity, maybe we’ll just make this a constant thing!!

Young homeowners in rural areas

Nothing new here!

For those of us watching, this CTV report is nothing new.  The following are some of the observations from a Statistics Canada report:

The Statistics Canada report cites housing costs as a main reason younger people are moving to rural areas — also there are more rentals available.  Six of every 10 young people aged 25 to 39 in Canada who did not live with their parents owned their own home in 2006 — the highest level amongst those living in rural Canada..

We were just out visiting one such couple this past week.  James and Jennifer explained to us that they had moved to rural Saskatchewan in 2004 and been able to rent.  This past year they were able to buy, for a very reasonable price, an acreage outside of a small town.  They now have their first child and are looking forward to family life in the country!

Of course, on the other hand, Kindersley (a small town of 4,400) now has very little rentals available, house prices have increased and there is very little on the market.  The squeeze of the cities is headed our way!!

Early morning joggers – female (6:1)

Five minutes driving.  It’s 6:30 in the morning on the way to work.  I watch out my windshield.  Joggers are up plying the streets.  Usually in pairs.  This is a social activity (much like having coffee).

My observation?  Of seven that I encounter, six are female.

Now, not to rock the boat, but — we are always told that only men would get up in the morning for an early breakfast, or for a Bible Study, or for a social time.  My observation this morning says the opposite!

Would an early morning jog club be acceptable?  Are these jogging pairs peer counseling — the answer to community mental health?  Maybe these are just mom’s who need time away from the kids before the day starts?

And the best question of all — What was I doing riding in a car when I could have been out in the fresh air?

Canadian passports and technology

As you may know, you can now go on line to start your Canadian passport procedure.

A friend of ours came by today to get some help.  The idea was to print of the passport application.

Now, I like technology.  The first computer we used did not have the right Java application.  Rather than wait for a download, we went to another computer.  The Windows system was older (98) and the Java application was not up-to-date.

Off to a third computer — at home!  The Java app was there, but the printer didn’t have quite the right margin settings.  So one page needs to be photocopied with some adjustments.  A second application was attempted.  Everything was there.  But the government system software only allowed us to print the unformatted information.  After a few tries we gave up.

Maybe another day it will all work.  Ah, the hope of technology!
