Living Wide

There is something about winter.

As snow falls and we become confined to a house or residence, we begin to feel restricted.  We can hibernate for the sake of rest.  Most of us become agitated and grumpy.

For most of us here in Kindersley, we have hit almost six months of winter.  Half a year.

My hairdresser this week commented on this negative attitude.  She has taken up the positive attitude that winter is great.  The crunch of snow, the white that is bright white, the enjoyment of outdoor activity.  When people come in complaining she overwhelms them with the good side.  And, I imagine, the room’s atmosphere changes and the sunshine begins to appear.

What if we began a contest?  Let’s see how many good things about winter we can talk about.  If you want to comment below, I’d love to hear what you have to say.

I too have heard the lamentations of this long winter. As your hairdresser has, I have been trying to find the positive things in this winter. Just last night, we had the opportunity to attend a fund-raiser for the Air Cadets. It proved to be a wonderful meal followed by a pleasantly funny performance by a magician/ hypnotist…just the thing to provide a change from the humdrum of this protracted season. More of this type of thing might be in order to help us cope.

The snow covers up the dirt and dust that drift through town once the fields are being seeded/harvested.
Shovelling provides a different form of exercise than what I get the rest of the year.
Snow drifts and ice give me an excellent excuse to stay home and avoid being out on the increasingly dangerous #7 highway.
Snow and wind keep the birds closer to the feeder near my kitchen window so I can enjoy their antics.
Walking on ice teaches me patience and good balancing techniques.
Winter provides a common ground for starting a conversation with complete strangers.
I would rather shovel snow than mow lawn,
There are no stinging wasps and bees in the winter.
Complaining about winter takes up all my complaining time so I have no time left to complain about people.

every snowflake sparkles as it reflects the light of the sun or moon….reminds me of how we need to sparkle as we reflect the Light of Christ.

A fresh snowfall invites children to jump and play – zooosh goes the sled, splat goes the snowball , the sound of cheers and laughter as snow angels bring back memories of long ago. Snowbanks become hideouts and sometimes homes of long ago when blocks are cut and stacked.

Fancy clad snowmen greet us as we walk by. And what is better than a hot chocolate when building the snowman is perfected.

The sounds and warmth of a crackling fire in the fireplace, a hot coffee, a warm cozy, and a good book are perfect companions for a snowy day.
