Watering, raking, fertilizing and cleaning

That was the early morning yesterday.  I was up early enough that I couldn’t justify awakening my neighbours as I raked the lawn.  My preference would have been to use the lawn mower!

The water had fallen from the sky in the last while so I was able to place the fertilizer and let the process begin for the wintering of the grass.  That was an easy task!  Meanwhile, the morning had awakened and I did use the mower to sweep up the remaining leaves.

Watching leaves fall reminded me that my eavestroughs, that drain the water that falls on the roof that keeps me dry, were probably getting plugged.  Best to check and clean.

I wonder if our lives need the raking, fertilizing and cleaning as leaves begin to fall in the autumn of our lives.  Much has happened.  And now there is a slowing down period.  And soon will arise spring once again.  But for now we need to prepare.

Of course, God is the one who does the preparing by watering our lives.  But after that there is often a time for our own work.

May the work of this time be given in love and anticipation.

God at work

In 1938 our church began.  The slogan used at that time:  “We are here to worship God and see Him work.”

Yesterday our service embraced the idea that God is at work.  A few weeks ago a man in Edmonton heard God speaking the word “Kindersley” in his ear.  In a desire to pursue the calling, Keith Burgess began to explore Kindersley on the Internet.  He came across the website for Kindersley Alliance Church.

He explored my blog and found I was a recent widower.  He was too!  He checked out the sermons at the church – and listened to Pastor Ryan Lee’s recent sermon on prophecy.  On the second listen he wondered who was preaching.  Ryan Lee was a name he knew!  He had taught him in Sunday School 14 years ago.  That was the last time they had been in contact.

Keith contacted Ryan.  This was the same one!  Keith decided to drop in on our service yesterday – and shared this with the congregation.  I was amazed at God’s working.

Towards the next step

Today I spent time in commitment to God.  I do not want to be less than fully given to where God would lead me, to what God would want to do with me, or to who God would want me to become.

These steps are never easy.  They require looking back – seeing what has gone on before – the good and the bad!  They require looking ahead – expecting both the good and the bad but believing that God is in control.  And right now?  Trusting that the present commitment will move me to greater heights.

Ever looked into the names of some schools?  Particularly ones that are no longer there?

Take a look at this plaque for a school no longer there.  The school’s name is “Penkill”.
